SNUG TIERS
Park at Margate Primary, cnr Van Morey Road and Channel Highway. The Snug Tiers ride is one big clockwise loop from here… the first dot point and the last three are on the Margate page (p.200) of the street directory! • Ride up Van Morey Road for about an hour (10km) it turns into a dirt road and gets steeper the further you get into the Tiers. At the top is a gravel turn around point. Continue past this another 1km until you find an intersection with two fire trails heading off from it; one left and one right. • Take the left fire trail, riding up past the big rocks. After a few hundred metres, take your first right onto another narrow fire trail. This right hand track heads north, the one you were on continues west. If you start descending before turning right, you’ve gone too far. • After turning right, the track takes you on a lovely fun 4WD track downhill through wet forest. (Some challenging wet rocks if it has been raining). • The track will end up coming out of a fire trail near someone’s back yard onto a dirt road. Follow this road until you hit a sealed T-intersection. Turn right. • Follow the bitumen up a short 100m ascent to a crest, turn right into another road. There is a shed on the corner on the right. Take your first left and follow the road downhill for about 2km until turning right at a corner into the first paddock on the right. There is a small Telstra sign at this point. • This begins a 4WD turning into single track (the old tram way) all the way down to an opening, (don't turn left at the first farm) continue straight ahead, as the trail continues. You will come out onto a dirt road, follow this dirt road all the way down to the chicken farm. • A few hundred metres after the chicken farm, turn left along the Nierinna Creek walking track. This is lots of fun… single track, steps, technical tree root stuff that contours up and down through dry forest above a creek (which you can’t see much of to start with). • Towards the bottom of this walking track you’ll be riding along a single track in the grassy flat next to the creek. Continue over the first road! • At the end of this track, turn right into a bitumen road (Burnaby Drive), then left along Nierinna Road which will take you to back to the Channel Highway; turn right and it’s not far back to the car. • If, instead of turning right into the bitumen road you keep following the last bit of grassy single track along the creek you’ll have to ride up another hill before following the highway back to the car. User reviewsby Ben H on 19-May-08This is a very cool circuit. The Umfrevilles Road Fire Trail from the top of the tiers to Kaoota is mostly a steep and fast, closed in fire trail (pretty skinny in most parts), the old Sandfly Coal Mine Tramway trail from Kaoota to Margate is mostly fast flowing single trail and the Nierinna Creek track is a great little XC track with small steep descents, small steep ascents, steps, switchbacks, etc.
